The New York Times' lead on its November 16 story about the gubernatorial election in Louisiana ("Democrat Wins Runoff Election in Louisiana") focused on the fact that the victor, Lt. Gov. Kathleen Blanco, is the first woman elected governor there. She defeated Piyush Jindal, an Indian-American "Republican whiz kid."
I can't help but wonder: If Jindal had won (as was expected less than two weeks before) would the lead be about him being the first Indian-American to be governor - or would we be treated to another "Republicans continue irresistible sweep across country, nothing can stand in their path!" stories?
Update: CNN headlined an AP story with "Louisiana vote stops Republican sweep." So at least some outlets did acknowledge, even if in a backhanded sort of way, that there was a traditionally political (as opposed to sociopolitical) meaning to this.
