Former Senator Paul Simon died Tuesday due to complications in the wake of heart surgery. He was 75.
A slightly rumpled, slightly odd, little man who always wore a bow tie and who with surprising regularity turned out to be a little more to the left than you expected. He was by no means a radical but he was both a genuine liberal and an honorable man. I came to respect him.
Footnote: Not that it matters but I suppose it should be noted for the record that his last political act was to call reporters in Iowa from his hospital bed prior to surgery to endorse Howard Dean.
