Feeling a little like Ambrose Bierce

One line from a Christian Science Monitor story about people who believe in the "rapture" and an imminent "Second Coming" of Jesus caught my eye:
A 2002 survey showed that 59 percent of Americans believe that the events in the Bible book of Revelation will occur in the future.
It reminded me of the polls that indicate that more Americans believe Earth has been visited by space aliens than accept evolution. It's so frustrating. It's just - I mean - it's just that as individuals we Americans can be amazingly bighearted and generous. But as a group, we are a pile of insular ignoramuses.
