So much for a "new beginning"

The BBC for April 6 tells us that
Haitian police have arrested the former interior minister of exiled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. ...

Mr Privert is accused of helping coordinate the killing of political opponents in Saint Marc - around 96km (60 miles) north of the capital Port-au-Prince - as violence raged in the run-up to Mr Aristide's fall. ...

Mr Privet's arrest comes days after Haiti's new government announced it would block dozens of former Aristide officials from leaving the country - including former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune.
The accusation, that is, relates to a crime supposedly committed during the slow-motion coup that overthrew Aristide. If the accusation is true, Privert clearly deserves punishment.

But it will be interesting to see if any of Gerard Latortue's "freedom fighters" are similarly charged for their atrocities.

Update: On Tuesday, I mentioned Colin Powell's one-day trip to Haiti, where he called for the "new beginning" of the title. However, I missed this, as reported in that day's New York Times:
Port-au-Prince, Haiti, April 5 - Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said during a visit here on Monday that American judicial authorities were looking into prosecuting the former Haitian president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, on corruption charges.

"There are inquiries being made by our judicial authorities in the U.S. to see if there is any evidence of wrongdoing on his part," Mr. Powell said....
This "new beginning" is sounding more and more like the old imperialism.
