Letting bygones be bygones

Updated It's nice to know who your friends are, isn't it? The BBC for June 17 tells us that
President George W Bush has upgraded relations with Pakistan by formally naming it as a major non-Nato ally.

The move is in recognition of Islamabad's contribution in the fight against al-Qaeda, and is being seen as Washington's way of saying thank-you.

Pakistan will now enjoy a special security relationship with the US
enabling it, among other things, to obtain US-made military equipment that was previously unavailable to it and receive priority delivery of military supplies.

So, Pakistan, that little business in February when the head of your nuclear weapons program confessed to smuggling nuclear technology to Iran, North Korea, and Libya over a period of 12 years, a scheme most everyone in the world said could not have happened without official knowledge? Ancient history.

The "growing assault on press freedoms" and other human rights issues? Unimportant.

The fact that, according to the 9/11 Commission, you helped the Taliban shelter Osama bin Laden right up to 9/11, in fact you "significantly facilitated" his stay in Afghanistan? Fuhgeddabbudit.

Yep, that's all behind us now. I mean, after all, if both we and the UK can embrace Uzbekistan, the country that believes in boiling prisoners as a means of interrogation, that continues to regularly torture people in detention, then hey, why can't we make you a special friend?

Updated to add the mention of the UK's support of Uzbekistan.
