As long as we're in that part of the world

Kathimerini also reported last week that in a discussion about NATO involvement in security preparations for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Athens, Defense Department spokesman Lawrence Di Rita specifically allowed for the possibility of unilateral US intervention, saying
"Well, we'll always act to defend our national interests and to defend US citizens around the world."
Needless to say, this didn't go over big in Greece.
Public Order Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis declared that security of the Games was Greece’s responsibility and the Communist Party voiced outrage at the "unprecedented provocation."
But don't you understand, you're not Turkey. We don't have to play nice with you. Welcome to the War on Terror(c)(tm)(pat. pend.) and the world where "everything's changed," including the notion that you might, you know, have any say in what we might do in your country.

Footnote, just FYI: Kathimerini reported earlier that 300-500 armed US anti-terrorist troops will be stationed near Athens during the Games.
