American Voice 2004 has a discussion of various ways by which "every vote counts and a vote for a minority party or candidate is not wasted." Methods mentioned include fusion tickets, cumulative voting, preference voting, instant runoffs, and proportional representation.
The Center for Voting and Democracy also has some information on alternatives to our one-and-a-half-party-controlled, winner-take-all (and usually first-past-the-post) elections.
