Uh, excuse me, didn't you just say....

Point, from the New York Times for Wednesday:
In the latest changes at the Central Intelligence Agency, Porter J. Goss, the new chief, ... has abolished a daily 5 p.m. meeting that had been used since the Sept. 11 attacks to coordinate counterterrorism operations around the world, intelligence officials said on Tuesday. ...

The move appears to reflect what Mr. Goss has publicly said was his concern that the C.I.A. under Mr. Tenet may have devoted too much time and resources to terrorism at the expense of other issues.
Counterpoint, from the New York Times for Friday:
An internal investigation by the Central Intelligence Agency has concluded that officials who served at the highest levels of the agency should be held accountable for failing to allocate adequate resources to combating terrorism before the Sept. 11 attacks, according to current and former intelligence officials.
When Aldous Huxley said "the only completely consistent people are dead," he didn't perceive the half of it.

But on another point, you know, this is shaping up as one of the great White House PR coups of our times. It was all the CIA's fault! Everything! Iraq! No WMDs! 9/11! Bad service at the coffeeshop! All their fault! Ignore that man behind the curtain! Nothin' to do with us, no sir-ree! Blame them!

But what about the ignored warnings from the Clinton transition team that the Bushites would be spending more time on terrorism than any other topic? What about Paul O'Neil's contention that the Shrubberies were focused on Saddam Hussein from day one? What about Richard Clarke's repeatedly rebuffed attempts to get meetings? What about the August 6 daily briefing with the section titled "bin Laden determined to attack inside the US?" What about the supposed anti-terrorism task force headed by "The Big" Dick Cheney which didn't have its first meeting until September 10, 2001, and then with second-tier officials?

All gone poof. Down the memory hole. As the WHS* snicker.

*WHS = White House Sociopaths
