All is not lost

May 6: Rev. Chan Chandler, pastor of a small Baptist church in Waynesville, NC, has nine people booted from the congregation because they didn't support Bush. One of the nine charges that during the presidential campaign, Chandler said that anyone who planned to vote for John Kerry should either leave the church or repent.

May 8: After receiving a great deal of criticism, including from fellow Baptist ministers, Chandler calls it all a "great misunderstanding" and tries to welcome the nine back while continuing to deny politics had anything to do with the matter.

May 9: Americans United for Separation of Church and State writes to the IRS suggesting it should reconsider the church's tax-exempt status.

May 10: Rev. Chan Chandler quits as pastor of East Waynesville Baptist Church.
