Acknowledging "the history of pernicious discrimination faced by gay men and lesbians," the Connecticut Supreme Court declared on Friday that "the segregation of heterosexual and homosexual couples into separate institutions [marriage vs. civil unions] constitutes a cognizable harm" and so
gays and lesbians should be afforded the same basic right to marry as any other citizen of the state, paving the way for same-sex marriages to begin in that state before the end of the year. ...Yes! And that's all I have to say about that.Republican Gov. Jodi Rell said she disagreed with the ruling, but said the state would not challenge it, convinced "that attempts to reverse this decision -- either legislatively or by amending the state Constitution -- will not meet with success."
With no challenge from the state, gays and lesbians in Connecticut could be getting married as early as mid-November....
