Left Side of the Aisle #90 - Part 3

Clown Award: Pope Benedict XVI

This week's dishonoree is Pope Benedict XVI, who will always be the appropriately-named Cardinal Ratzinger to me. On Sunday, January 6, he declared that Roman Catholic leaders must have the courage to stand up to attacks by "intolerant agnosticism."

These "intolerant agnostics," with "their own dogmas," are trying to push religion out of public political debate.

Catholic bishops must have the "courage" to stare down this intolerance. The Church can't abide this intolerance.

This came less than three weeks after his annual Christmas address to the Vatican bureaucracy, in which he described homosexuality as a "choice" and denounced same-sex marriage as an "attack" on the traditional family that denies God and destroys the very "essence of the human creature," which is apparently determined solely by whether you pee standing up or sitting down. This followed his annual "peace" - consider the word to be in quotation marks - his annual "peace" message in which he labeled same-sex marriage as a threat to world peace.

So, I'm sorry but did he say church leaders have to stand up to intolerance or for intolerance?

The Pope was probably cheered by the news that the GOPpers in the House of Representatives have chosen to use adoption of rules for its new session to commit to sinking even more money into defending the grossly-misnamed Defense of Marriage Act in court, along with adding the declaration that this expresses the view of the whole House - when quite obviously it does not.

Let him take what pleasure he can because increasingly and happily, the world just not listening. In addition to the election gains in the US this fall, there are prospects for passage of such a law in Illinois and a few other states. The Constitutional Court in largely Roman Catholic Spain upheld the law legalizing gay marriage last month. The British government has announced it will introduce a bill in 2013 to legalize gay marriage there. In France, President Francois Hollande is to submit his "marriage for everyone" plan to parliament next month. And there is increasing confidence among advocates for justice that the Defense of Marriage Act, which has already been found unconstitutional by 10 different US courts, will be struck down by the Supreme Court after it hears arguments in March.

Still, none of this changes the fact that Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Ratzinger, who sits atop a Church that regards homosexual acts as "intrinsically disordered," is a clown.
