Bill Clinton, the man who signed the Defense of Marriage Act and has since changed his mind, is let's say trying to make up for lost time. He has urged the Illinois state House of Representatives to pass the same-sex marriage bill already passed by the state Senate three months ago.The bill has been held up by opposition from conservative groups and some black churches, but supporters are now claiming they have the votes in the House to pass it before the May 31 deadline. Gov. Pat Quinn supports the measure, so passing the House would mean that Illinois shortly would become the 13th state to approve same-sex marriage.
Meanwhile, on the international side, on May 18 French President Francois Hollande signed a law authorizing marriage and adoption by same-sex couples. France is the most populous country to have legal same-sex marriages, and the 14th country worldwide. The first marriages could take place within days.
