Hero Award: Wen Jones
Now for a Hero Award, given as occasion arises to people who just do the right thing on a matter big or small.
This is a picture of a man named Wen Jones, a 43-year-old father of two, taken as he was being interviewed by ABC News recently:
This is a picture of Wen Jones as he looked on May 19:
That's the day Jones was leaving Juno Beach Park in Florida when he came upon three 20-year-old men harassing a 14-year-old boy named Zion Wright. The trio had been kicking sand in his face and calling him names. When Zion's father, 55-year-old Leroy Wright, arrived, he told the men to leave the beach.
But, the father later said, "I see that these guys were not backing down, and I literally had to keep them at bay."
That's when Jones arrived and, thinking the men were about to attack, stepped in.
"I couldn't stand there and watch this older guy and kid get beaten up," Jones said.
He urged the men to calm down but instead, they turned their attention to Jones, who was beaten unconscious. He suffered a concussion that he said still makes him feel foggy months later, along with fractured bones and an eye swollen shut, injuries bad enough to require surgery.
When police showed up, the three men ran away. What brings this up now is that thanks to witnesses taking cell phone footage and getting license plates numbers, police tracked them down and last week the last of them was arrested. They are now facing felony battery charges.
Okay, that's why now. Why at all?
"I'm not happy to have been injured pretty severely, but at the same time, I ask myself, would I do it again? You know, it was the right thing to do, so I probably would," Jones said. “You know doing the right thing is always the right thing.”
I have said it before: "I'd do it again." Those are the words of a hero.
