157.4 - Hero Award: Hector Montoya

Hero Award: Hector Montoya

Now for one of our occasional features: It's the Hero Award, given as necessary to someone who just does the right thing on a matter big or small.

This time, the honor goes to 9-year-old Hector Montoya of Dallas, Texas. You may have already heard about this because it's gone sort of viral, but it's still worth noticing.

Hector had been saving his money for more than a year because he wanted to buy a new Playstation 4. But then he heard about a mother and daughter who were killed in a house fire in the nearby community of Grand Prairie, killed because the house lacked a smoke detector.

Hector said "It hurt my heart" and so it was goodbye Playstation, hello 100 smoke detectors to supply one for every house in the community that didn't have one. The Grand Prairie Fire Department helped to install them.

It turns out Hector won't have to start saving from scratch: Two complete strangers were so touched by his story that they gave him his very own Playstation 4 plus $150 to buy more smoke detectors for his community.

So he came out with his game anyway, but of course he didn't know that going in. What he knew going in was, as he said, saving a life was more important than a game.

Which makes Hector Montoya a hero.
