Next up, we have two instances of what we call The little Thing, were something in a news report or article that gets little comment, which is generally overlooked, is particularly revealing or disturbing.For the first one, we'll start with the fact that when Bill Bratton was chosen to be police commissioner for New York City, I was upset enough to call it the Outrage of the Week. Now we can see a reason why.
Bratton announced end of January that the NYPD is establishing a new "anti-terror strike force." It will consist of some 350 cops specially trained in high-tech weaponry and equipped in ways regular cops are not, including extra heavy protective gear, long rifles, and machine guns.
The unit will be dedicated to “disorder control" to deal with protests, “lone wolf” attacks, and evolving threats posed by terrorists.
Wait. Back up. Protests? This unit with extra heavy protective gear, long rifles, and machine guns is going to be dealing with protests?Yes. Bratton specifically included dealing with "events like our recent protests" as part of the unit's job. So events like Occupy Wall Street and the entirely peaceful protests about Ferguson and the Eric Garner verdicts are now going to be dealt with by an elite force of cops with heavy protective gear, long rifles, and machine guns.
More and more, when these people say 'we want to keep you safe," I wonder just who it is they are talking to.
