Well, another small part of my youth has dropped away. It's getting to the point where there are as many gaps as solid places.Lesley Gore has died of lung cancer at the age of 68.
Although she had a string of hits in the mid-1960s, she is likely best known for her very first hit, "It's My Party" and one that became a sort of defiant feminist anthem, "You Don't Own Me."Her star faded in the late '60s as hard rock, acid rock, and psychedalia supplanted girl-group and boy-group ballads. But she continued to perform and started writing her own songs, including one that was in the movie "Fame" and was nominated for an Oscar.
She leaves being her brother, her mother, and her partner of 33 years, Lois Sasson.
RIP, Leslie Gore.
